The Plan

The Horizon Project is truly massive in scope and can be compared to projects like Linux, Windows, and other large software projects. In order to assure that we do not falter, or go in too many directions at once, we must develop a plan and stick to it.

Over the next few years The Horizon Project will attempt to create a community where interested individuals can come together to discuss the future of software, talk about the problems they face developing software today, as well as any solutions that they may have in mind, and plan for the future of the Horizon Project. During this period the development work will focus on creating a core framework for the Horizon Project.

Once there is an active community of developers and a concrete plan in place for what the Horizon Project should consist of, we will transition into a phase of active development where we will focus on building the features that the community has determined necessary.

As primary development work wraps up we will release the first version and begin the long process of evangelizing the Horizon Project to software makers in an effort to begin the transition to the next generation of software. This will not be an easy task; entrenched opposition will fight hard to maintain their hold on their power. However, if software and the internet as a whole are to survive and advance, we must accomplish this. During this phase we will continue to improve the Horizon Project as well as plan for future releases.

The following is a thumbnail list of required technologies for the first release.
  • User Interface
  • Secure HTTP Replacement (Unified Network Access Protocol)
  • Cryptography
  • Database
  • Networking (Sockets)
  • Threading, Multiprocessing, and Asynchronous Programming Support
  • Globalization
  • Multimedia
  • Operating System Services
